How do you measure a kite's width and length?

Measure the width straight across the widest point, where the bow (kaanp, کانپ) crosses the spine, and the length from the top tip to the bottom tip of the frame along the spine (ThaDDa, ٹھڈا).

  1. Lay it flat

Put the kite face down on a flat floor so the bow is not pressed out of shape.

  2. Measure the width

Run the tape straight across the widest point, from one tip of the bow to the other.

  3. Measure the length

Run the tape along the spine from the top tip to the bottom tip of the frame.

  4. Check both

Enter both numbers above. A kite must be within the limit on width and on length.

How big is a 1 tawa or 1.5 tawa kite?

Lahore sizes kites in two traditional units. The tawa is based on a sheet of kite paper, which Lahore kite makers say is usually 20 × 30 inches; sizes in tawa run from adha (half) and pauna (three-quarter) to ek (one) and dedh (one and a half), and a 1 tawa kite is roughly 33 inches wide and 29 inches tall. The githi is a hand span of about 9 inches; Lahore's patang is measured in githi and is traditionally 3 to 6 githi wide.

reported (one source)Source: Amjad Parvaiz

Tawa and githi are trade units, not legal measures, and hand-made kites vary, so always measure in inches. Don't convert githi: a hand span is reported at about 9 inches, yet the official 4.5 githi patang is 35 inches wide. The inch limits are the only test. More on the names in kite sizes explained.

What happens if a kite is too big?

An oversize kite is banned material: making, storing or selling it can bring 5 to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 5 million, and flying it breaks the rules too.

Registered sellers may sell only kites within the limits, and only 10 February – 14 March 2027, from registered sellers only. If a kite you are offered looks large, measure it before you pay, or walk away. Every kite we stock will be measured against these limits before it goes on sale.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2 tawa kite legal?

No. The largest legal kite is a 1.5 tawa gudda, at most 40 × 34 inches, so any bigger tawa size is banned.

How many inches is a 1 tawa kite?

Roughly 33 inches wide and 29 inches tall by one Lahore guide, but hand-made kites vary, so measure the kite itself.

Can I check a kite in centimetres?

Yes. Switch the checker to cm; it converts to inches before comparing with the official limits, which are set in inches.

Is this checker official?

No. It applies the official limits from the Punjab kite-flying rules, but it is a guide: only an inspection by the authorities decides whether a kite is legal.
